SMYTH-BLAND REGIONAL LIBRARY
LONG RANGE PLAN
It is the mission of the Smyth-Bland Regional Library to ensure the preservation and transmission of society's knowledge, history and culture, and to provide the people of Smyth and Bland Counties with free and open access to information for education, recreation and reference.
Smyth-bland Regional Library is committed to promoting the enjoyment of readin and providing welcoming facilities for learning and growing.

CURRENT TOPICS AND TITLES: The library will provide Current Topics and Titles to help fulfill community residents’ appetite for information about popular cultural and social trends and their desire for satisfying recreational experiences.
LIFELONG LEARNING: The library will provide Lifelong Learning service and help address the desire for self-directed personal growth and development opportunities.
CULTURAL AWARENESS: The library offers heritage enrichment to help satisfy the desire of community residents to gain an understanding of their own cultural heritage and learning.
Administration, Governance and Planning
1.1. Beginning July 1, 2017, assess existing leadership capabilities and needs.
2.1. Encourage local jurisdictions to make libraries more accessible for patrons with disabilites by June 30, 2017.
3.1. Survey on-line library users and evaluate satisfaction with the resources (e-books, audio books) offered through the library's homepage by June 30, 2017.
3.2. Explore trends in technology to meet patron demands by June 30, 2018.
4.1. Annually review and weed 5% of the collection.
5.1. Provide more public space for Chilhowie Library by June 30, 2018.
5.3. Provide public space at the Bland County Library by June 30, 2018.
5.4. Provide public space at the Marion Library by June 30, 2021.
6.1. Develop instructional classes and programs for staff around library technology, software, and electronic offerings, including expanded services for hand held devices by June 30, 2018.
6.2. Manage hardware acquisition and replace policies (on-going).
VII. A well-traind, public service-oriented staff is the most critical element in providing high-quality library service to out community. The public library will encourage training and education fo all staff.
7.1. Provide increased training opportunites for library staff in customer service and technology relevant to their positions. All employees should receive training in various formats to improve job performance and competence in using any equipment required to perform their jobs (on-going).
7.2. Encourage continuing education opportunities by providing information, time needed to attend workshops, and fellowships for employees pursuing MLS degrees by June 30, 2020.
Community and Public Relations
9.1. Reinstate Smyth County staff time (to cover 25% cut made in April, 2010) to the Outreach Program to meet needs of Senior Citizens by June 30, 2017.
9.3. Provide updated equipment, i.e. (3) iPads for long term loan to Nursing Homes by June 30, 2018.
